RUGBY LEAGUE British The powerful Wigan and St Helens teams managed winning margins of only four points as they struggled through their third round matches in the John Player Special Trophy knock-out competition. Wigan beat Salford, 16-12, at Salford, and St Helens was a 20-16 home victor over Hull. Widnes increased its lead in the first division by comfortably accounting for the Challenge Cup holder, Halifax, at Halifax. The former top optimist skipper, in his first season in the P-class, won the Tanner Cup trials, and the right to represent Canterbury at Nelson in January. Stechman who clinched a win by 2s in difficult conditions, from Milton Bloomfield in the fifth race after a close tussle, and stayed on course to a third place in the final race to guarantee the over-all win behind the series favourites Alister Rowlands, and Nell Briggs. Victory slipped from Rowlands, and Briggs, after the pair were disqualified or a premature start in the crucial fifth race, along with two other skippers Jeremy Smith and Daniel Jamieson. Rowlands recorded same salvation, when he won the final race by 53s from Briggs. Keith and Rass May continued their domination of the Sanders Cup trials to finish the series with zero points from Barry Wilcox, and Tony Roberts on 17.7 points. The May Brothers clinched the series with large wins In all the races and handled their boat immaculately in the awkward conditions which prevailed in some of the races. The veteran Zephyr skipper, Ken Maynard, continued his good form to win the fourth race of the South Island Zephyr Championships at the Christchurch Yacht Club last Sunday. Maynard who made a good start in the fourth race led round the first mark from last year's champion in the event Bill Beere, but. on the run to the wingmark Maynard slipped to eighth place in the shifty wind. At this stage Sandra Hines at the helm of Zippy, sailed through to take the lead, and headed off the fleet at the next three marks, from a fast- closing Maynard. However on the final beat to the finish Maynard, picked up a good windshift to win by 35s from Hines, with Murray Hay in Muscatel, 45s further back in third place. With only one more race to sail in the series, Hines, will be endeavouring to win her second South Island title, and Maynard his first. The pair are first equal with 16.6 points. In the Canterbury Finn Championships Freerk Kempkers quickly stamped his dominance on the series after missing the first two races. However the over-all placings after four races are led by Nick Winters, a newcomer to the class this season with 20.4 points, from Bernie Lyons, with 24.7 points. A further three races are still to be sailed in the seven race series. In the Canterbury JC championships Darryl, and Michelle Pender, wrapped up the series with a win in the final race to finish with three points from Snoopy (A. Hames, A. Barrett) with 8.6 points.
