Govt package on sale

Chronos, a software product developed by the Department of Statistics, has been released on the New Zealand market Chronos, formerly called INFOS, is a time series information manager which allows large amounts of valuable data to be organised and managed for the benefit of large organisations. Mr Merv Robertson, Progeni’s executive director, said the package had been designed for both end-users (via a computer network) and for EDP professionals at the corporate information centre. After doing market research in Australia and the United States, Progeni concluded that Chronos had a "real future” provided it could be made to run in larger IBM mainframe computer environments. “This work has now been completed and the package will be launched in Australia early next year and in the U.S. during mid-1988. Mr Ron Welply, Acting Government Statistician, said the Department of Statistics looked around the world for a suitable software package but had no choice but to develop Chronos. It was the software that allowed organisations throughout New 'Zealand to access online the large official statistics database via the INFOS Service.
