Complaint dismissed against Chch ‘Star’

PA Wellington The Press Council has dismissed a complaint by Mr R. Brott, of Christchurch, against the “Star.” Mr Brott, secretary of the New Zealand Rubber Industry Superannuation Fund, complained that an article in the “Star” on August 10 about the fund contained references to a person previously associated with it which were outrageous and without foundation. Mr Brott claimed that publication of the references was irresponsible journalism and had

caused distress to the family of the person who had since died. After the article appeared, Mr Brott complained by telephone to the editor, and on August 12 the “Star” ran another article which included comments by Mr Brott rebutting references in the August 10 report which were the subject of his complaint. The editor told the Press Council that in his view the publication of Mr Brott’s rebuttal two days after the original article appeared had ensured a

reasonable balance in the . matter. ■ The “Star” had?xdls- ’. charged its duty to report / fairly and had not been irresponsible as claimed ; by Mr Brott. The Press Council in Its : decision said that if the ■ “Star” had not published ; Mr Brott’s rebuttals promptly, he would have ; had ground for complaint,. But publication of his • comments two days after ; the original report met > the situation adequately, and the complaint could , not be upheld. ; ? , 1
