Design award entries exceed 1987 tally

NEARLY 500 entries have been received from more than 220 designers for the 1988 Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards, to be presented in the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington, on March 1. ; The figure is up > from last year’s entry with many new names , figuring, some of whom are already associated « with the fashion indusi try. ; In past years more .* entrants have been individuals without any particular affiliation. John Juriss, a Christchurch success in the 1987 awards, has entered this time in four categories, the Wool Award, which he won last year, and the daywear, young designer and eveningwear sections. Preliminary judging

for the 80 to 100 nominations for the presentations will not take place until late January, so between now and then those who have entered have a lot of work to complete, bearing in mind that the judges look not only for a garment that will catch attention but more particularly for the fashion trend expressed, cut and finish, and the compatibility of fabric and design. The breakdown of entries in the seven sections suggests that the “glamour” section, the Revlon After Five Award, may be the hardest to judge, with 130 entries. The Brother Young Designer of the Year Award has 95; there are 85 in the Evening Post “Flair” High Fashion Daywear section; 53 in the Fashion in Wool Award; 47 in

the Leather Industry Award; 42 in the new menswear section; and 36 in Leisure Lifestyle. Between 12 to 18 garments will be nominated from each section for final judging.
