Lakewood Drive
Sir,—“Lakewood Drive be limited to left-turn movement only as an interim measure” This was the recommendation to the Waimairi District Council on November 3, 1987, by the traffic engineer. The owner of the land where a proposed new link road from Stillwater Avenue to Burwood Road may go tells me he received assurances from the council on November 9, 1987, that no “heavy tactics” would be used to buy his land and demolish his buildings. Is Lakewood Drive to become a cul-de-sac as soon as planning permission is given? In 1981 I received assurances that the connection of Stillwater Avenue to the expressway, as shown on the district scheme plan, was the intention of the council. Why not make the connection now? —Youra, etc., G. A. JEFFREYS. November 11, 1987. [The Waimairi District Engineer, Mr A. J. W. Lamb, replies: “Mr Jeffreys’ letter refers to some of the options which are being investigated in a response to traffic concerns of residents in
the area. The council and a local committee of residents’ groups, of which Mr Jeffreys is a member, have considered these and many other options; although opinions in the area are divided. Links to Burwood Road are elements of these options. The council’s sub-committee is ensuring that all views are considered carefully so that recommendations can be made to the next Works Committee meeting, to be held on December 1. We are mindful of the welfare and needs of families and children living in the area, and the tremendous cooperation from residents trying to reach the right solution.”]
