ARCHERY Two Soviet archers, Yelena Martel and Irina Soldatova, broke the 70 metres world record at the Soviet Union Cup competition. Martel scored 330 points to set a new record and Soldatova 329 points. Both used 36 arrows. The previous record with 36 arrows was set by Natalia Butuzova, of the Soviet Union, who scored 328 points during an international competition in Lodz, Poland in 1979. BOWLS Michael Anderson and Murray Shaw, of Linwood, earned entry into the Papakura junior classic pairs bowls tournament in January when they won the inaugural Wrightcars Toyota and Runaway Holidays tournament at the Linwood club.
They beat Doug Jury and John Horgan (Beckenham) in their semi-final before scor-
ing a 16-9 win over their final opponents, Brian James and Roland Adams (Kaiapoi). The other semi-finalists were John Hamers and Russell Dratton (Cashmere). SQUASH Pakistan Masters At Karachi — quarterfinals: Jansher Khan (Pakistan) beat Maqsood Ahmad (Pakistan), 9-2, 9-3, 9-8; Phil Kenyon (England) beat Brett Martin (Australia), 9-6, 9-3, 92; Chris Robertson (Australia) beat Zarak Khan (Pakistan), 6-9, 9-5, 9-3, 9-4; Jahangir Khan (Pakistan) beat Umar Hayat (Pakistan), 9-1, 9-3, 94. TENNIS Young Masters At Friedrichshafen, West Germany: Magnus Gustafsson (Sweden) beat Boris Becker (West Germany), 2-6, 6-4, 6-2; Patrick Kuehnen (West Germany) beat Ola Kristiansson (Sweden), 6-1, 6-2.
