Like several of the grand houses open to the public in Britain, Chatsworth in Derbyshire has a personality and presence of its own. It is described with warmth and good humour by the Duchess of Devonshire whose home it is, and who has been responsible for the restoration of many of the rooms. The first part of the book is concerned with the history of the Cavendish family — the Dukes of Devonshire. The second part of the book is a tour guide to the house with the 1844 descriptions of the Bachelor Duke (as he was known) being brought up-to-date by the present Duchess of Devonshire. — Thelma Strongman.
