Native forests

Sir,—l write to correct some errors in your report of my comments regarding native forests in Clutha County (November 21). My letter to the Minister of Conservation does not ask her to intervene and stop felling forests on private land. Rather, it asks her to initiate a scheme change which would make such clearing operations a conditional' use in the county. If the Minister agreed to make this move, her proposal would be open for public objections and a review by the Planning Tribunal. If the

Planning Tribunal upheld the Minister’s proposal, the Clutha County Council would be required to make decisions on applications for logging native forest according to a set of criteria in its district scheme. Such a proposal would extend to the rural environment the type of development controls already widely accepted in cities. The forests in question are mainly not beech, but rata, kamahi and rimu. — Yours, etc., GUY SALMON, Director, Native Forests . Action Council. November 24,1987.
