Vandalised block to be demolished

The Pegasus Bay Surf Life Saving Club toilet block will be demolished. The block was vandalised in September. Stainless steel toilets were hacked with axes and ripped off their foundations, cisterns were taken and shotgun blasts destroyed the windows. The club is in the Pines-Kairaki district and the Kaiapoi Borough Council objected to paying for a replacement toilet block. The Rangiora District Council’s building inspector was asked to report on the cost of restoring the block. His report to the council on Tuesday said that to replace the vandalised fittings and equipment, to repair the structural defects and other general work, including painting the block, would cost $4505.

The Pines-Kairaki Community Council told the District Council that the club was unable to finance any part of the restoration and its recommendation that the block be demolished was carried. Petition A petition requesting the sealing of a portion of Rinaldi Avenue at Pines Beach was reviewed by the council. Eleven residents and the Pines-Kairaki Cricket Club petitioned the Community Council' to have the unsealed portion of Rinaldi Avenue considered a priority. The petitioners said that since the formation of the Cricket Club traffic had increased greatly. In the dry season dust was a problem for residents.

The Community Council’s recommendation that a “No Exit” sign be placed at the entrance to this part of the avenue was carried. The petitioners would be advised that there were no funds in this year’s estimates to seal the road. Fault found Pines-Kairaki residents will not have water restrictions Imposed. The District Council’s Services Engineer, Mr Keith Lucas, reported that' water restrictions would be imposed soon, as one of the pumps was cutting out at Rinaldi Avenue. However, the District Engineer, Mr Gareth - James, told the District Council on Tuesday that the fault had been discovered in the station.
