Tourists to continue trip

Timaru reporter Up to 14 of the tourists involved in the Mount Cook bus accident on Wednesday will continue their tour today and will travel on to Queenstown. The 15-day tour still has 10 days to run and also goes to the North Island. Mr Tim Hunter, of the Mount Cook Group, said some of the elderly West Australians were keen to continue. “Because of their age they are not planning to return to New Zealand so they want to make the most of it”

The body of the woman killed in the accident Mrs Elizabeth Sanderson, aged 76, of Subiaco, Perth, will probably be flown back to Australia on Sunday, according to Mr Hunter.

Her husband, Mr John Sanderson, is staying at the Grosvenor Hotel in Timaru. Mr Hunter says he does not want to speak to anyone. Mr Sanderson’s son flew in from Australia yesterday morning, and is also staying at the Grosvenor. Last evening 26 of those injured were still in Timaru Hospital. Five others were staying in the nurses’ home to be near the injured. Fourteen of the tourists took a short bus tour around Geraldine and Temuka yesterday afternoon. Mr Hunter said some of the 26 injured could be in hospital for a week or longer. Mount Cook would fly out relatives from Australia if they wished.
