More funding for exporters
A Government-funded export development scheme, the Individual Exporter Programme (1.E.P.), has been reviewed and expanded. The Minister of Overseas Trade and Industry, Mr Mike Moore, announced yesterday that from Monday, November 23, the maximum assistance that a company can receive through the I.E.P. will double from $50,000 to $lOO,OOO. The scheme, which has been operating since March, has a budget of $2O million for the two years ending March 31, 1989. It comprises 11 programmes, each focusing on a different aspect of export market development. Assistance is by way of a tax-free grant. Mr Moore said grants of over SSM have been made to about 750 companies since the scheme’s inception. He said each company had received an average of three grants and because of this it is appropriate to Increase the total amount an individual company may receive. Several other changes to the programme were also announced: • A grant of up to $lO,OOO is available to asslst with the employment
Of a marketing consultant in the capacity of a parttime export manager. •Up to $50,000 is available towards the cost in the first year of setting up an overseas office. Up to $25,000 is available for the second year. • A maximum of $lO,OOO is available for export research. • Exporters can apply for a maximum of $l5OO towards the cost of supplying samples to potential overseas buyers. • A grant of up to $5OOO is available for the registration of products for use overseas. Mr Moore said all IJE.P. grants are for the lesser jf 50 per cent of total :osts or the maximum specified. "I want to stress that Jie I.E.P. is not a handout,” he said. He said it is a solution to a problem faced by all New Zealand companies involved in the earning of foreign exchange. "That problem is how to market exportable goods and services effectively In the global marketplace.”
“If we do not develop an export marketing base which accepts these requirements, we have a bleak future,” he said.
