Christian Scientist defends sect

A Christian Science spokesman has defended his sect against an attack by a controversial American Christian author, Mr Dave Hunt, who visited Christchurch this month. “We are saddfened that at a time when Christian ethics' and morality are so desperately needed by mankind, Mr Hunt should find time to attack other Christian beliefs,” said a spokesman for the Chris-

tian Science Committee on Publication for New Zealand, Mr Grahame Candler. Mr Hunt had mentioned some beliefs, including Christian Science, as being credos which had their roots in superstition and witchcraft. Mr Candler quoted from the tenets of Christian Science to show that its roots were embedded in Biblical teachings.

He also quoted from the sect founder, Mary Baker Eddy, who said: “If Christian Science lacked the proof of its goodness and utility, it would destroy itself; for it rests alone on demonstration.” Mr Candler said, "Christian Scientists rejoice in the daily demonstration of God’s presence and power to meet their needs.”
