Remand prisoner flees in pyjamas
A pyjama-clad Addington Prison inmate fled on Saturday evening from Burwood Hospital, where he had been taken for medical treatment. Philip James Bartram, aged 22, escaped about 7 p.m. and was last seen in hospital-issue blue pyjamas. He had bare feet Bartram, who is on remand for the aggravated robbery of staff at the Sherborne Dairy late last month, was under prison escort at the hospital. He was admitted suffering wrist Injuries. , » * . * Another house was checked by the Christchurch police at the week-end in the search for Stephen James Malcolm, wanted for questioning about a stabbing outside a Sydenham house on November 13. Malcolm, aged 21, is described by the police as dangerous. The police say they have interviewed several witnesses to the stabbing in Gasson Street, which put a youth, aged 16, in Princess Margaret Hospital. They are now keen to speak to Malcolm. The youth suffered a single stab wound to his chest.
A pedestrian suffered moderate to serious injuries when struck by a car on Halswell Junction Road early on Saturday. Kevin Fountain, aged 18, of Carlton MUI Road, Merivale, was admitted to Christchurch Hospital with head, chest and leg injuries. He also suffered lacerations. His condition was described yesterday as “not so well but fairly comfortable.” The accident occurred about 1 a.m. * * • A Morris Minor car stolen on Thursday evening got a lucky reprieve from a Hornby wreckers yard on Saturday morning. The thieves had sold the car to the wreckers, according to the Hornby police. A relative of the oiyner recognised the car in the yard on Saturday morning and the owner hastily retrieved the car before dismantling began. * * » A man believed to be suffering from a drug overdose collapsed on Saturday about 200 m north of the New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club headquarters.
The man, aged In. his early 20s, was walking with two children and a dog about 2.50 p.m. when he collapsed in a semiconscious state. A young girl reported the matter to nearby lifeguards. The man recovered sufficiently to be taken to his sister’s house in nearby North Beach. Christchurch’s lifeguards ended the second week-end of voluntary beach patrols yesterday, — having yet to make a rescue. . ; The publicity officer for the Canterbury Surf Life Saving Association, Mr John Monck, said overcast conditions had kept beach attendances down. ? • ’. * •' ■ * Property worth $Bl3O was stolen in a burglary of Noble Brass, Durham Street, on Thursday night The offenders smashed a small window to gain entry. They then opened roller doors and are believed to have backed in a car and trailer to take the property. They made off with an industrial lathe, drill presses, grinders, polishing units, vices, oxy-acety-lene equipment and office furniture. •>
