Self-funding driving courses proposed

PA Wellington The Government has proposed that defensive driving courses become self-funding, to avoid further financial difficulties.

The Defensive Driving Council was wound up after being unable to meet debts of more than $139,000. Its driving course has been taken over by the Ministry of Transport. The council, which will remain in existence until the future of its assets is decided, was now considering the proposal, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries. A spokesman for the Minister’s office said he believed the proposal had been accepted. The Government had suggested that a trust be set up to administer the courses, Mr Jeffries said. "The courses would become self-funding so that there would not be a repeat of past financial difficulties.’’ Defensive driving courses had a vital role in preventing senseless road deaths by increasing drivers’ skills, he said. During the 19 years the defensive driving programme has been running, about 280,000 drivers have passed through the system.
