Courtenay A. and P. Show wools impress trade head

In a time of downturn for the agricultural economy, possibly the most hopeful message of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Kirwee on Saturday, came from a visitor to the show, Dr Vincent Tsai. Dr Tsai is the mapaging director of the East Asia Trade Centre in Wellington — in effect, Taiwan’s diplomatic post in New Zealand. Declaring himself very impressed with the "beautiful” cashmere wools he saw at the show, Dr Tsai said that he wished Taiwan could buy more beef and wool from New Zealand. New Zealand could increase all its exports to Taiwan, he said, in meat, wool, milk powder, timber, fish and aluminium. Dr Tsai was at the show as guest of the local member of Parliament, Miss Ruth Richardson, who said that she intended to make a habit of bringing overseas trade representatives to such shows. It was Dr Tsai’s first rural show in four years of living in New Zealand.

In a speech to the crowd, Miss Richardson said that it was time to get' out the economic “survival kit.” She said that her guest came from a country the size of Canterbury with 19 million people, and yet with the second-highest trading surplus in the world. It was no secret that the key to Taiwan’s success was the same as the key to the success of the show. “It is all about hard work, it is all about enterprise, it is about being responsible and being responsible citizens,” she said.

The president of the CourtenayA. and P. Association, Mr Terry Gallagher, judged it a very successful day. Entries were generally up, and stock was “certainly in fine condition,” he said. Mr Gallagher said that he was also very pleased with the produce shed. As in previous years, a parade of farm machinery was a feature of the show.

“We are very pleased with the machinery people coming out here again, economic conditions being what they are,” said Mr Gallagher. Total entries were up to .3146, compared with 2692 last year, some of the biggest increases being in wool, many of the horse classes, and grain and seed. There was also much stronger support for the cooking, home industry and photography competitions. Gate takings, however, were down about $2OO on last year. Horses CHAMPIONSHIPS
