Shastri omitted from West Indies test
NZPA-Reuter Chandigarh The Indian cricket selectors omitted the batsmen, Ravi Shastri and Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday when they named a 14-man squad for the first test against the West Indies starting in New Delhi next Wednesday. Ranbir Singh, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, said Shastri was not considered because he had not signed a new contract with the board. Sidhu, one of the successes of the Indian team which reached the semi-finals of the recent World Cup, has a thumb injury and told the selectors he should not be considered. Three other players, the
new captain Dilip Vengsarkar, the outgoing skipper Kapil Dev and the spinner Maninder Singh, signed their contracts on Friday before th§y were included, Singh said. Many Indian players are unhappy with the contracts which restrict the wearing of advertising logos on clothing and prevent their writing newspaper columns while playing matches. Shastri apart, all have now agreed to the terms. The Indian squad: D. Vengsarkar (captain), K. Srikkanth, A. Lal, M. Amarnath, K. Dev, M. Azharuddin, K. More (wicket keeper), M. Singh, C. Sharma, A. Ayub, W. Raman, S. Sharma, S. Manjrekar, C. Pandit
