Child’s body found in river
A girl, aged two, was pronounced dead at Christchurch Hospital yesterday afternoon after being pulled from the Heathcote River in Beckenham by a i passer-by.
The dead girl was Rene Joy Axford,of Christchurch.
A young woman found Rene floating in the river just after 3 p.m. and pulled her out near the
corner of Waimea Terrace and Malcolm Avenue. She attempted to resuscitate the girl. Ambulance and hospital staff also attempted to revive her without success.
The police said her family was helping friends' move into a nearby house. Rene was reported missing to the police at 3.30 p.m., when her family was unaware of her fate.
