New sponsorship near
Sponsorship of the Canterbury men’s Countrywide basketball league team for next season should be known by the end of next week. Converse pulled out at the end of the 1987 season, although Canterbury finished second in the national championship when trying to re-
tain its 1986 title. Two companies want to sponsor Canterbury, and both are believed to be national. A decision will be made on a long-range sponsorship. Apart from Clyde Huntley, who is at present in the United States, no further overseas recruit has been gained, because of the delay
in sponsorship. It boils down to what money is available. When it is forthcoming the favoured new player for Canterbury is Frank Smith, perhaps the best American basketbailer in
New Zealand. He has played for Nelson for two years. Saints (Wellington) are also striking problems. They also have been approached by national companies for sponsorship.
