Brothers guilty of robbery
After deliberating for more than five and a half hours, a jury in the High Court yesterday found two brothers guilty on charges of robbery of shops and service stations on June 30 and July 4. Mr Justice Williamson remanded Mathew Mark Pakau, aged 31, a painter, and Carlston Pakau, aged 22, unemployed, in custody to December 4 for sentence. Mathew Pakau was found guilty on five counts and Carlston Pakau was found guilty on one charge of aggravated robbery and on one charge of assault with a knife with intent to rob. He had already been discharged on one count of robbery during the course of the trial. Mr David Saunders appeared for the Crown and Mr Michael Knowles for Carlston Pakau. Mathew Pakau was not represented. The Crown alleged that Mathew Pakau was the principal offender, having made threats to obtain money, and Carlston Pakau helped and was regarded as a party to the offences.
