Worst ’copter crash in years
PA Wellington The triple fatality helicopter crash yesterday was the worst helicopter accident since a Bell 206 crashed into Mount Ruapehu in December, 1982, killing all five people aboard. So far this year 29 helicopters and 83 fixed-wing aircraft have been involved in accidents, according to the Ministry of Transport Helicopter accidents had, until yesterday, resulted in the deaths of three pilots.
On May 4 a pilot died when his craft crashed at a Waipukurau kiwifruit orchard; on June 18 the pilot of a helicopter died when it hit a wire near the Arawata River mouth, a passenger suffered serious injuries; on October 22 a pilot died when his helicopter crashed into a hillside in the Kaimanawa Ranges. The 1982 accident occurred at night during a demonstration of airborne floodlights near Turoa ski-field.
