Thompson to ride at Bayer Classic
PA Levin The most successful country jockey in Australian racing history, Robert Thompson, will be riding at the Levip Racing Club’s Bayer Classic meeting on Wednesday. Thompson, aged 29, who is based at Cessnock (near Sydney), will be brought to New Zealand by the Levin club and is spending several days here. Keenly followed by punters, Thompson regularly rides more than 100 winners every season and three years ago set a record of 165 winning rides. In the last 14 years he has been beaten only twice in the Newcastle premiership, winning the title five times as an ap-
prentice and seven as a senior jockey. Thompson was Australia’s representative in the Asian Racing Conference series in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur last year, riding seven winners. He has previously ridden in New Zealand as an apprentice at Ellerslie and Hastings. This season Thompson rode Just A Steal for Tommy Smith to win the Spring Championship Stakes, the Champagne Stakes for Neville Begg on I Like Diamonds, and the Moonee Valley Cup on Reckless Tradition.
