Stabbing was manslaughter

A verdict of manslaughter was returned by a jury in the High Court yesterday against Paul Lloyd Poulton, aged 22, a sickness beneficiary, who had denied a charge of murder.

Poulton was remanded in custody to December 4 for sentence by Mr Justice Tipping. The jury took more than four hours to reach the verdict

Poulton had pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering Lynn Patrick Riley, also known as Bart Riley, aged 26, on June 26.

The Crown alleged that Poulton stabbed Mr Riley during a brawl in front of a house in Colombo Street north during a party held in memory of a voung man who had died in Sydney and was to be buried a few days later.

The wound penetrated the left side of Mr Riley’s chest into the heart Mr Riley died soon after being admitted to Christchurch Hospital.

Messrs Graham Panckhurst and Philip Shamy appeared for the Crown, and Messrs David Jones and Gerald Orchard for Poulton. The trial began on Monday.
