Golf classic attracts 400
The draw for the eleventh Garden City Golf Classic has thrown up some interesting pairings, including the teaming of two former rugby fullbacks, Ross Murray and Jack Goddard.
Murray, who is the patron of ■ “The Press” sponsored stableford event, played first-class rugby for Otago at fullback and more recently has been an international amateur golfer while God-
dard, now domiciled in Timaru, played at fullback for the 1949 All Blacks. One of the more effective teams should be Adrienne Bond, runner-up in the New Zealand women’s matchplay championship recently, and well-known race caller, Reon Murtha, who will no doubt be keen to exercise more than the vocal chords he has stretched over the past two weeks.
Proceeds from the two day tournament this week-end, which will again be played at the two Harewood courses, will be used to buy three monitors for the New Zealand Cot Death Society. The society will also receive sufficient funds to service the monitors for 12 months. The event has attracted a field of about 400 golfers and 36 hole fourball stableford rules will again apply.
