Alabaster experiments

By DAVID LEGGAT, NZPA correspondent in Perth New Zealand cricket coach, Gren Alabaster, sprang a couple of surprises when he named the side to play Western Australia in a four-day game starting at the W.A.C.A. today.

Two of the players who missed Thursday night’s four-wicket win over Western Australia, vicecaptain John Wright and Wellington all-rounder Evan Gray, have again been omitted. The others to stand down today are seamers Ewen Chatfield and Martin Snedden. Off-spinner John Bracewell and outstanding fast bowler Richard Hadlee come in for their first games of the tour. The selection further confirms the thinking that the tour selectors, Mr Alabaster, captain Jeff Crowe and Wright are doing their planning long term rather than game to game.

Mr Alabaster said there was nothing sinister in the non-selection of Wright and Gray. Wright’s omission gives Ken Rutherford and Phil Horne a second chance to open together. The main reason for Wright not playing was to give Horne another innings after his first up failure on Thursday night. Mr Alabaster said there was no injury worry for Wright Although not confirming the batting order, Mr Alabaster did say that Martin Crowe is almost certain to stay at No. 3. Today’s match is an important one for young fast bowlers Danny Morrison and Willie Watson.

With Chatfield and Snedden resting, it is a chance for the Auckland pair to stake an early claim for test inclusion. The Western Australian team for the match is unchanged from Thursday, with Todd Breman the probable 12th man again. New Zealand: Jeff Crowe (captain), Phil Home, Ken Rutherford, Martin Crowe, Andrew Jones, Dipak Patel, Richard Hadlee, John Bracewell, lan Smith, Danny Morrison, Willie Watson. Western Australia (one to be omitted): Graeme Wood (captain), Geoff Marsh, Mike Veletta, Tom Moody, Wayne Andrews, Ken MacLeay, Tim Zoehrer, Chris Matthews, Todd Breman, Peter Capes, Bruce Reid, Steve Milosz. The match will start at 4 p.m. New Zealand time.
