Labour-policies

Sir,—B a Apolitical party; chooses to make a mess of itself) (as parties occasionally do) then it should be free to do so and th® - voters should be free to vote accordingly. That is a part of what democracy is about. This is not an area in which it is appropriate for the Government to intervene. Sf the Labour Party

has problems working out what to do with itself, it is not appropriate for a Labour Government to bring in new laws controlling political parties because they may affect other, better-run parties. Even rules that would not change the way other parties are run would reduce the range of choices that such parties would have in the future. It is odd that a Government that closes down unprofitable post offices is prepared to consider Intervening when its own party has financial problems. — Yours, etc.,

JOHN RING. November 18, 1987.
