Alcohol on aircraft
Sir, —Congratulations to the Licensing Control Commission for turning down Ansett New Zealand’s application to serve alcohol on its domestic flights (November 11) and thumbs down to Ansett for trying to use alcohol to lure customers from Air New Zealand. We are not aware of any consumer demand for this service. Most people can survive for 80 minutes (Ansett’s longest flight) without alcohol,
and those who feel they cannot need assistance to cut down rather than encouragement to drink more. The festive season is fast approaching. This is traditionally a heavy drinking time, with all the accompanying problems of traffic accidents and domestic violence through overconsumption of alcohol. At this time we need to be thinking carefully about how to contain our already serious alcohol problems in New Zealand, rather than adding to them by providing more occasions and opportunities for people to drink alcohol. — Yours, etc., DIANE SHANNON, T.E.A.M. (Toward Ending Alcohol Misuse). November 12,1987.
