Call for liquor advt rules
PA Hamilton The Hamilton-based anti-liquor advertising group, Goal, Is petitioning Parliament to make liquor advertising rules as strict as those for cigarettes.
“It is a bit of an anomaly that it is not,” said the national secretary, Mr Cliff Turner. The 4050-signature petition was presented this week to Parliament by the member for Hamilton East, Mr Bill Dillon, Mr Turner said. It calls for agreement between the Minister of Health, Mr Caygill, and the liquor industry on advertising limits.
The voluntary cigarette agreement already in place meant that no brand could call itself the No. 1 cigarette, but one beer could be advertised at sports matches as No. 1 beer, Mr Turner said. Cigarettes could not be advertised on hoardings or television and only a company’s name could be used for sporting sponsorship. Cigarette packets and advertisements also had to carry health warnings.
