CRICKET Ann McKenna was the toast of St Albans on Saturday after scoring her 10,000 th run for the club in senior women’s competition. McKenna shared an unbroken opening partnership of 113 with Lois Simpson as St Albans recorded an easy win over Riccarton at Porritt Park. Earlier Riccarton had scored 112 in its 60 overs, being restricted by a tight St Albans attack. After 40 overs 65 had been scored but the arrival of Karen Gunn stepped up the scoring rate. She made a quick 40 and was not out at the close. St Albans recorded a 1 flwicket win as McKenna and Simpson rattled up the required runs in accomplished fashion. In the second match, Lancaster Park was asked tb bat first by Sydenham and was given a fine start by Nicki Turner and Penny Kinsella, who featured in a 108-run stand.

With the dismissal of Kinsella, Sydenham fought its way back, restricting Park to 152. Andrea Walker continued her good form to be 17 not/out at the end of the 60 ovtfrs. For Sydenham Sheryl Meekan used the new ball well, conceding only 12 runs in 10 overs.

In reply, Sydenham started brightly with Karen. Le Comber scoring a brisk 23. However, when she was out the run-rate fell below the required 2.7, making it necessary to play through a shower of rain.

The conditions favoured the batsmen as the ball became soggy and the outfield slippery and a fourth wicket partnership of 72 between Trudy Anderson and Vivienne Browne proved a matchwinner as Sydenham passed the Park score in the fiftythird over. St Albans now leads the competition but is closely followed by Sydenham with Riccarton in third place. WOMEN Senior ST ALBANS v. RICCARTON RICCARTON C. L. Cadigan c Illingworth b Bond 14 D. L. Woolston W. M. C. 82/6 (L Wedlake 36 n. 0.. Washbourn 3/ 18) lost to Bumside High School 96 (P. Cox 50, J. Cherry 40). SUBURBAN Merivale-Papanui was the only team to secure firstinnings points on the first day of round four competition on Saturday. However, Southern Districts, New Brighton and Hornby look set for firstinnings points in their matches. At St Leonard’s Square, Sumner, playing host to Meri-vale-Papanui, bowled the visitor out for 140 with Kevin Collins, the best of Merivale’s batsmen, scoring 51. Don Braid was the chief destroyer, taking four for 28. Sumner did not have an excessive total to chase, but it lost three early wickets and composed itself only with a steady middle-order effort by Kim Sanders. Sanders, playing only his second senior match, went on to score 58, including 11 boundaries, before being caught out. After going through to 115 for seven, Sumner could add only two more runs to its total before being toppled for 117, 23 runs in arrears. At Richmond Park, Richmond W.M.C. batted first and scored a respectable 177 from 49 overs. Robbie Withers, with 61, and Roy Wesney, with 47, were the main contributors. Hornby did not have the best of days in the field, missing six catches. Carl Stills, leading the attack for Hornby, was rewarded with five wickets. At stumps and with 15 overs still remaining, Hornby had 140 for five. Bob Kerr

shone with the bat, being undefeated on 78. Roy Wesney took four of the five wickets at the low cost of only 10 runs from six overs. At Rawhiti Domain, Heathcote dismissed New Brighton in the fiftieth over for 139. Heathcote, in reply, is in a difficult position with seven overs remaining. It is 46 runs in arrears and has three wickets in hand. Steve Collier led Heathcote’s innings to finish 36 not out at the end of Play. The remaining match was between Southern Districts and Upper Riccarton at Riccarton Domain. The home team was asked to bat first and reached 176. Dave Stuthridge, a fourth-grade player in recent years and now back from overseas, will add strength to the batting lineup. He scored 20 on Saturday while Nicky Dierek batted well in reaching 47. Southern Districts are in a comfortable position, having lost only three wickets, two of those through run-outs, to be 41 runs short of Riccarton’s total. Most teams were weakened by the absence of senior representative team players. There was one centuryf, scored by Roger Campbell, of the Sumner Club, playing in the Third A graue on Saturday. Campbell scored 120. There was also a hat trick by Frank Van Woerkom, bowling for Air New Zealand against Prebbleton. He took five wickets for 13 runs including his hat trick.
