Couple plucked from river
A Christchurch couple were plucked to safely by an R.N.Z.A.F. helicopter after they became stranded on a shingle bank in the middle of the Waimakariri River yesterday.
The pair had waded across a branch of the river to a shingle bank about I.6km below the old Walmakiriri bridge only to find a short time later that the river had risen and they were unable to make a return crossing.
A woman noticed at 3.10 p.m. that the couple appeared to be stranded and called the police. An Air Force helicopter was sent to the scene and lifted the couple, who by that stage were standing ankle-deep in water, from the river.
