1990 a big year
The year 1990 is likely to be a big year for the Internal Affairs Department because it is the marker year for so many important events in New Zealand history. It will be the 1000th anniversary of the landing of the Maori people, and will be the 200th anniversary of the first settle-
ment by sealers and whalers. Of greatest importance in terms of formal activities, it will be the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The 150th anniversaries of the cities of Auckland and Wellington also fall in 1990.
