New role as arts co-ordinator
The producer of “Kaleidoscope,” Denis Harvey, has been named arts coordinator with Television New Zealand. He will act as a central clearing point, receiving ideas and information on artistic events, assessing them and channelling them to appropriate departments. Harvey says his main priority is to get more arts coverage on television, and not necessarily in the traditional arts programmes.
“There is a lot happening in the community which deserves television coverage — but if we don’t hear about it, or it is fed through to an inap-
propriate department it could get lost,” he says. “Television New Zealand has a social obligation to explain the arts on television and it is my job' to see that this gets done as efficiently and effectively as possible. I shall channel programme ideas towares ‘Kaleidoscope* and ‘Opus,’ or if it seems more appropriate to other areas, such as light entertainment or regional news.”
He also wants to make sure Television New Zealand has a higher profile in the arts.
His first big project is the co-ordination of the coverage of the 1988 New Zealand International Fes-, tival of the Arts.
