Parents centres’ president in Chch
Parents’ centres help to prepare parents mentally and physically for their role, says the federation’s national president, Mrs Karen Eagles. Mrs Eagles was in Christchurch yesterday to visit the Christchurch branch. The parents’ centres offer courses ranging from ante-natal classes to “living with a preschooler” or “starting school.” People often found they made friends with other
class members and this support continued after the courses, said Mrs Eagles. The centre could also put members in touch with other organisations which could offer help. Mrs Eagles said that the “kite-flying” by the Minister of Social Welfare, Dr Bassett, about the abolition of the family benefit was of concern and opposed by the federation. The Parents’ Centre in Christchurch has more than 500 members.
