Call to support Mozambique?
By BRENDON BURNS, political reporter A call for Commonwealth support for beleaguered Mozambique is expected at next week’s meeting of Commonwealth leaders by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. This could include appeals for military assistance.
Speaking before his departure on Thursday for ' the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (C.H.0.G.M.) in Vancouver, Mr Lange said he expected southern Africa to be a main issue at the conference. Mozambique was not a Commonwealth country but it provided port access for several countries,
including Zimbabwe, Botswana and Malawi. Support from C.H.O.G.M. would be sought, with the Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral, Sir Shridath Ramphal, a keen promoter of the idea. He is a stem critic of South Africa, which is supporting rebel forces in Mozambique.
