Trotters provide highlight
By ALEX McMILLAN A keen finish between the talented performers, Circular Note and Classic Dee, in the Cl and faster trotters’ heat the only highlight at an otherwise uninspiring trial meeting at Rangiora yesterday. Circular Note (It), after receiving the run of the race behind the pacemaking Ten Four, dashed to the lead early in the run home and lasted well to dead-heat with a fastfinishing Classic Dee (70m), which was conceding the leaders a generous start with 600 m to run.
Circular Note, driven by her West Melton trainer, Grant Archer, recorded 3min 35s for the 2600 m journey, her last 800 m in 62s and 400 m in 30.85. The Robert Dunntrained Classic Dee, driven by junior relnsman, Rod Butt, was credited with a time of 3min 29.45, the seven-year-old daughter of Sergio Hanover being timed
over her final 400 m in 30.35.
Circular Note, a five-year-old Game Pride mare, has had only three race starts to date, for an unlucky fourth at Greymouth, a decisive win when resuming at Methven last month, and a 1 failure after a bad early break at Addington. She races next in the Dave Peters Handicap Trot (2800 m at Motukarara on Saturday.
Classic Dee, assessed at C 6, is being prepared for the feature trotters’ events at next month’s New Zealand Cup carnival. Game Magic, which finished third behind Circular Note and Classic Dee yesterday, was later disqualified on the grounds of pacing in the early stages of the event. Regal Rebel and Special Day were promoted to third and fourth respectively.
Robert Dunn produced the winner of the main pacers’ heat when Idle
Bromac capitalised on a perfect run behind the leader, Swift Hurricane, to beat that runner by a nose in the event for C 3 and faster performers over 2600 m. The El Patron four-year-old recorded a rather ordinary 3min 35.2 s for the journey, but sprinted home his final 800 m in 59.75, with the last 400 m taking 29.65.
Alabama Express, a stablemate of the winner, fought on doggedly for third, one and a half lengths back, clear of Bronze Tiger (10m) and Megatrend (10m). The latter did well to finish as close. The son of Clever Innocence broke hopelessly at the start. The lack of pace in the middle stages of the event enabled him to make contact with the bunch at the 1600 m. The four-year-old, which was timed over his final 800 m in 59.4 s and 400 m in 29.35, appears fit and may resume racing later this month. The first four placegetters yester-
day are all acceptors for the 3200 m Galleiry Interiors, Ltd Handicap Pace at Motukarara on Saturday. Other winners were Motu Supreme (CO; mobile; 2600 m; 3min 37.75, 800 m in 63.35, 400 m in 29.25); Starboy (Cl; mobile; 2600 m; 3mln 34.75, 800 m in 60.15, 400 m in 28.95); Star Majestic (CO; 2600 m; 3min 39.75, 800 m In 59.25, 400 m in 28.95); Royal Vision (CO; 2600 m; 3min 33.35, 800 m in 60.35, 400 m in 30.65); Home James (CO; 2600 m; 3min 32.75, 800 m in 61.35, 400 m in 29.75); Ashley Brigade (CO; 2600 m; 3min 37.85, 800 m in 59.25, 400 m in 30s); Rubik Lobell (CO; trotters; 2600 m; 3min 40.65, 800 m in 62.85, 400 m in 30.95); Canasta King (Cl; 2600 m; 3min 49.15, 800 m in 62.95, 400 m in 29.15) and Hallfield Nat (C2; 2600 m; 3min 31.45, 800 m in 59.75, 400 m in 29.65).
The two-year-old heat over 1600 m was won by the Peter Ryder-trained Glamour Trix, a colt by Niatrlx from the Goodland mare, Eblouir. The half-brother to Jayex and Glamour Chief easily outfinIshed the early pacemaker, Kotare Pageant, to win by two lengths, recording 2min 13.35, his last 800 m in 64.6 s and 400 m in 31.75.
