Aust. firms on steady demand

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed firmer yesterday as steady demand for quality industrial stocks offset flagging interest in the resources sector. Selected buying saw banking, merchant, alcohol and tobacco and developers post modest gains, brokers said. But there was little change to bullion prices, which dampened demand for miners. Trade was thin because Sydney markets were closed for a Labour Day holiday. At the close the all ordinaries index was up 12.9 points to 2253.4. The all industrials rose 24.1 to 3365.8, the gold marker 1.9 to 3855.4 and the all resources 4.3 to 1399.8. National turnover was a light 63.90 million shares worth sAustlBl.2l million. Rises outnumbered falls by about five to three. Banking stocks led the industrials up after a solid performance in London on Friday. Westpac added 30c to 694, the ANZ 18 to 560 and the National Australia Bank 8c to 594. Developers also improved. Hooker climbed 20c to 520, James Hardie 10 to 500 and Jennings 2c to 340. Lend Lease went against the trend, falling 20c to 1760 on thin turnover. Elsewhere, Amatil climbed 30c to 950 and TNT 4c to 664. FAI slipped 20 to 980, Mayne Nickless 10 to 630 and Brambles 10 to 1120. Resource stocks were mixed in thin trade. MIM climbed 13c to 343 and 10c gains took CRA to 1050 and

Peko to 940. Bougainville lost 10c to 500 and Beil Resources was steady on 538. BHP was steady at 1065 and CSR climbed 13c to 485 on thin turnover.! Closing
