Campaign for museum at Mount Cook
A fund-raising campaign for a museum at Mount Cook National Park headquarters has been announced. The Mount Cook Museum Trust has been set up by a private group with the purpose of raising $350,000 for a museum. They believe that unless steps are taken now, many valuable items of unique historical interest might be lost. A number of very valuable items were stored at the j Mount Cook park
headquarters or the Canterbury Museum, said the chairman of the trust board, Mr Win Fisher. Exhibits would be made available if suitable display space could be provided, he said. Only limited Government funds were available and so the Conservation Department had been compelled to place a low priority on a museum, he said. In spite of this, the Aorangi National Parks and Reserves had
asked that future plans for the development of the park headquarters include a museum. The trust was independent of Government departments or corporations and so could accept donations towards a .museum. Donations would be taxdeductible. Mr Ray Newton, P.O. Box 393, Christchurch; Mr Jack Ross, P.O. Box 184, Ashburton; and Mr Win Fisher, Divans Road, Timaru, may be reached for further information.
