Catch quotas for squid, mackerel
Wellington reporter The squid and jack mackerel fisheries have been put under quota management by a Gazette notice on October 1. The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, has set a total allowable catch of 32,333 tonnes for squid caught by all methods in the Southern Islands fisheries management area, 10 tonnes in the Kermadec area, and 30,962
tonnes from other areas. A separate total allowable catch of 57,705 tonnes to be caught specifically by jigging has been set for fisheries management areas other than the Kennadec and Southern Islands areas. The territorial sea (12mile limit) in the Auckland fisheries management area north of 36 degrees has been specifically excluded from the quota management sys-
tem as a result of legal action by the Muriwhenua Incorporation. Mr Moyle has also set total allowable catches of 10 tonnes for jack mackerel in the Kennadec area, and of 20,000 tonnes in the Challenger, Egmoot and West Auckland areas. The two species were the last large fisheries to be brought within the individual transferable quota system, Mr Moyle said.
