Judges consider 312 entries Cover Contest decided
THE WINNER of the “Press Fashion” Cover Contest is Hannah Airey, of Loburn, North Canterbury, who appears on the cover of this section.
Hannah, aged 17, was picked from 12 finalists, whom the "Press Fashion” judges selected from more than 300 photographs submitted. Judging was an afternoon of hard work, with it being as difficult to know who to leave out as to pick.
The editor of “Press Fashion,” Janetta Mackay; top model Kirsty Lay, and photographer Peter Bannan, opted for entrants with photographic potential. We decided it was a good opportunity for people without experience in front of the camera to get the chance to try out As one of the prizes was a modelling course it seemed a good idea to pick a winner who had not done one before.
Still, the judges had no
preconceived idea of who the winner should be. Indeed, we were curious to see in person the finalists we had picked, as photographs can mislead. The finalists we photographed were.—
Hannah; Kirstee Blackburn, aged 14, of Kaiapoi; Vanessa Blackmore, aged 14, of Hornby; Lisa Caulton, aged 20, of Ham; Lisa Chaney, aged 19, of Sydenham; Caroline Dugan, aged 16, of Burnside; Amanda-Jane Fifield, aged 17, of Kaiapoi; Shanti Freed, aged 16, of St Martins; Jackie Hammond, aged 15, of Burwood; Alana Joe, aged 17, of Ham; Deanne Moller, aged 14, of Sockburn; and Robin Taylor, aged 15, of Merivale. Finalists were notified by telephone and their responses were mostly of surprise at being chosen. One of them, Leonie Russell, of Tui Creek, could not leave Dunedin, where she is studying, to be in contention. But, Leonie, like the other finalists, won
Silks hosiery and passes to a Kerridge-Odeon cinema and the Palladium We Club. When she is next in Christchurch she will-be photographed to complete her prize. H The finalists, except for Leonie, were brought together last month. Julie Abbot and Kirsty Lay of Pieter’s Model Agency did their hair and make-up and then Peter Bannan photographed them, wearing casual clothing. The photographs, printed later by Hanaflns, were given to the finalists as-part of their prize. Then came the hard bit for the judges, who had to consider which finalist should be the “Press Fashion” Cover Contest winner. We looked at the studio photographs which, being of uniform standard, put all finalists on equal footing. Hannah’s friendly camera presence proved the decider. —JANETTA MACKAY
