Coast rescues rise
Vessels valued at $52.5, million were rescued by the New Zealand Coast Guard In the year to June. This was an increase of 147 per cent on the previous year, according to the Coast Guard Federation. , The federation’s executive officer, Mr Michael
Grace, said the increase was caused by the rise in valuation of boats. Federation members answered 1466 calls for help, and assisted 3323 people during the year, he said. This was a 36 per cent increase on the previous year. The federation is now receiving increased fin-
ancial support from the Ministry of Transport, the Insurance Council, the Auckland Maritime Foundation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Lottery Board. A grant from the Minister of Recreation and Sport usually helps with the Coast Guard’s summertime work.
