NZPA-Reuter Rome A United States fighter shot down another American plane by mistake during a naval exercise in the Mediterranean, the United States Navy said.

It said a Sidewinder missile from an F-14 hit the Phantom reconnaissance plane between Sardinia and the Italian mainland during the annual exercise, codenamed Display Determination, involving the United States, Portugal, Italy and Turkey.

The two crew members werei rescued by helicopter, the statement said. The exercise, which ends on October 11, includes naval manoeuvres in the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black Sea as well as land operations in Italy, Sardinia and Turkey.
