Team eases pain of redundancy
By
RICHARD CRESSWELL,
industrial reporter
The employment team at Crown Crystal Glass in Hornby, where 280 workers will be jobless when the plant closes at the end of next month, has had 107 job offers.
Mr Jim Preston, a member of the employment team and a senior employment officer in the Labour Department, said
the team had so far placed 19 workers in new jobs and 56 had registered as seeking work.
There would be more seeking work once the redundancy deal was settled. Vacancies from employers had included everything "from kitchenhands to accountants.” Mr Preston said an administrative staff member at Crown Crystal had applied for the accountant’s position.
The employment team had also been approaching employers and placing advertisements for jobs, because the number of redundancies was increasing.
He said Crown Crystal closing had been a shock and a rude awakening for many workers. They were only now facing the reality.
“We are trying to make it as painless as possible,” Mr Preston said.
A redundancy deal for
the workers is expected to be settled today. A district organiser for the Engineers’ Union, Mr John Logue, said workers at the plant had met yesterday and approved a proposed redundancy settlement, which was to be presented to the company today.
He said the union was optimistic the redundancy deal would be struck today, but would not be drawn on the likely makeup of the agreement.
