Jean Batten died in 1982

PA Wellington The New Zealand pioneer aviator, Miss Jean Batten, died in Palma, Majorca, on November 22, 1982, said her nephew, Mr Rick Batten, yesterday. Mr Batten, a Northland estate agent, said he received a death certificate from the authorities in Majorca. The death certificate gave her name, place of birth (Rotorua), country of origin (New Zealand) and residence (Palma, Majorca).

“It appeared to be an original and was in Spanish,” Mr Batten said. “Details were handwritten under typed headings. It was in an ordinary envelope which was rubber-stamped ‘Registro civil Palma de Malorca’.” Attached to the certificate was a letter in Spanish which said: "Attached we are sending the death certificate for Miss Jean Gardener Batten in reply to your inquiry.” News of her death was not unexpected, Mr Batten said.
