Tamworth could change trainers’ fortune

Special correspondent Wellington It has not been all smooth sailing for the Hawera training partnership of Don Couchman and Paul Belsham in recent weeks, but their fortune could take a turn for the better when Tamworth contests the $lO,OOO Terrace Regency Handicap, the first leg of the Otaki Maori T.A.B. double tomorrow.

At his last start Tamworth finished fourth in the Trailways Handicap at Hastings, a race won by Infantry from Waggis and Guess. Guess went on to beat all but Secret Seal in the Ormond Stakes. Tamworth will face a trio of veterans in Our Boyfriend, Passive Prince and Beaver Boy. Our Boyfriend needed his run when resuming in the Trailways, while Beaver Boy boxed away in last Saturday’s Motorcorp Handicap at Awapuni. Passive Prince has been as consistent as any of his opponents with a fourth and second at Marlborough to show from his recent racing. Blackie’s Mate, the Waverley Cup

winner this week, will be a chance if he races again, while Marwitzer was a useful fourth on Wednesday. Miss Woodleigh is the form runner in the second leg, the $6OOO Gressier Stud Handicap. The mare was third and first in two Marlborough outings, her last win being achieved by no fewer than eight lengths.

Eight of the 11 runners are resuming, with Lady Aloof and Prince Royale expected to sprint well fresh. The stayers, Ragatan, Chance for Gold and Gallipoli are among them, and there could be some improvement from Noggin, which missed out when resuming at Tauranga just last week.
