Scratchings leave way clear for Admiral Soanai

Special correspondent Auckland The scratchings of Landora’s Pride and Minbar Lee has left the way clear for Admiral Soanai to score his second consecutive win in the Morrinsville Trotting Cup, to be run at Cambridge this evening. Admiral Soanai trotted a fine race when second, beaten by two and a quarter lengths, in the Impact Windows Mobile Trot at Alexandra Park on Wednesday, after being parked outside Landora’s Pride throughout. Last season, under similar circumstances to those which surround this evening’s Cup, Admiral Soanai led all the way and won comfortably from Jenner and Mister Square.

Admiral Soanai’s only open-class opponent tonight is Andy Brydon, while the remainder of the field is made up of trotters on the fringe of open company, with Your Honour and Great Life possibly the best chances. Count Westby, a promising third in his debut at Alexandra Park on September 4, could prevail from a strong field in the feature event, the $21,000 Morrinsville Juvenile Stakes. The Alba Counsel colt, a half-brother of last month’s $lOO-plus, Addington winner Blythbank Del, is closely related to the former outstanding pacer and moderately successful sire, Holy Hal. Trained at Cambridge by Charlie Hunter, Count

Westby won at trials on the track earlier this week. He has drawn handily at No. 2. Vance Reign, should he win, would reap owners Mr Charlie Elliott and his wife, Dawn, a large slice of a $lOO,OOO bonus, this was a clause after an auction sale of a service to Vance Hanover. In spite of drawing awkwardly at No. 17, Vance Reign, a winner in 2:5.3 at Alexandra Park on September 4, will be hard to hold out if the breaks go his way. Opposition, a highly rated Noodlum colt, has the ability to be prominent, especially after drawing the “ace.” His ownertrainer, Gordon Middleton, was quoted earlier this week as saying the horse is "unbeatable.”
