Skipper Dale favoured to redeem himself

By

JEFF SCOTT

The standing start specialist, Skipper Dale, is favoured to redeem himself for his last-start failure when he contests the $20,000 Tegel Poultry Flying Stakes at the Ashburton Raceway tomorrow.

Although handicapped on 15 metres, the brilliant beginner is likely to be in the body of the field on settling in the first leg of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double and a bold workout at this venue last Thursday suggests he can prove his lack-lustre sixth on the last night of the New Brighton meeting was out of character.

pay to underestimate the Methven pacer — he was equal to the occasion of coming from last to beat a similar lineup at Addington a fortnight ago. Sossy is a model of consistency and it is only a matter of time before he gains that elusive tenth win. Bob Cameron, who has combined so successfully with Sossy this term, retains the drive while the trainer, Richard Brosnan, has engaged himself for Sapper after his disappointing Methven showing. Richard’s brother, Tim, will handle the third Brosnan representative, Frangeljco. Master Mood is more forward than he was when fifth when resuming at the same time last year and must be respected even though he may need a couple of outings to show his true worth. Rolls Hanover, which paced two useful races at Addington earlier this month, and a fresh Laser Lad, would not surprise by getting into the finish either. Simon Katz won so well in the trotters free-for-all at Addington a fortnight ago that he is hard to go past in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the TNT Transport Trot over 3200 m.

The normally tough Nordel Skipper gelding showed little fight after being parked in a fast-run mobile 2600 m free-for-all after earlier giving his rivals a 10m start in the 2000 m sprint on the first night at New Brighton. The trainer-driver, Pat O’Reilly jun., took Skipper Dale to the Ashburton workouts last week and timed the horse to run the 2400 m post-to-post in 3:3 (the last 800 m in 58s), comfirming last season’s New Zealand and Auckland cups place-getter had an off-night at Addington. Skipper Dale will be attempting to win the Flying Stakes for the second year in a row tomorrow and will get spirited opposition, in particular from Sossy and Happy Sunrise, both chasing their last win to attain Cup class rating, and the two-tiihe Horse of the Year winner, Master Mood.

The Noble Lord gelding was three wide in the open throughout the 2000 m mobile sprint and still won comfortably from Tobago and the fast-finishing Tyron Scottie in national record time for a colt or gelding. Tyron Scottie’s latest racing has been mared by big finishes late and he is due to win at any time, while Melvander, which won the corresponding race over 2400 m last year, Firm Offer and Jenner, are other leading chances.

The burning question tomorrow is how well will the rising star, Happy Sunrise, begin. The impressive son of Steven Stock has only had three standing start races to date, the last of those in January, and has been slow to begin each time. Lack of experience will probably see him a little slower than the others in the opening 50 metres, but it will still not Jetbet: 8
