GRANT FOX, the record-breaking Auckland rugby union points-scorer, will have his goal-kicking skills tested at an unfamiliar venue next Wednesday night. Fox has agreed, and has been given approval, to take part in a contest against a prominent rugby league goalkicker, Robert Pera, of Mangere East, at Carlaw Park. They are to provide pre-match entertainment before the Glenora Bears meet the North Sydney Bears in a winner-take-all $20,000 challenge.

THE SOUTH ISLAND now has two representatives on the New Zealand Boxing Association’s council, Peter Leonard (Timaru) having joined Canterbury’s Mick Drury. Mr Leonard, the president of the Timaru Boxing Association, has now been elected as the president of the national body.

WHILE GOING AHEAD with legal action to try and gain the services of the Kiwi prop, Adrian Shelford, St Helens (Great Britain) rugby league officials have been carefully gauging the value of their £60,000 outlay to sign the Welsh rugby union World Cup prop, Stuart Evans. Aged 24, Evans had only watched the 13-a-side code on television before making the switch. His new employers could hardly have been thrilled by Evans’s press conference statement of “I can see it’s a more mobile game, I might have to lose some weight.” A few days later “The Times" reported Evans having a mixed debut in his new club’s surprise 27-21 loss to Leigh.
