Grandma’s place

Sir,—Three headlines, ’appar- , ently unconnected, ?in ; “TheC Dress”’ (September 22)?state: ■ "City council hedges biete'on tower,” "Council moves to create Jobs” (surely one of the most cynical actions I have ever heard of in the circumstances), “Sup-? port for monorail.” Some correspondents assure us that the tower would not create new employment, merely take workers from other jobs, so the jobs to be created will have to be labouring only and paid for by the ratepayers instead of by the contractors for the tower. The third item assures us that the ! City Council is not really against progress; and . when the tower project is starved away, they will then have to determine, amongst enormous controversy, whose backyards wlllbe skirted by the monorail 40 times a day, to the delight of the'residents so favoured. Visiting- Christchurch is like visiting grandma's place; it - is always the same. Next polling, day, unless something happens quickly, grandma will be in for a great big surprise. — Yours, etc., W. Al SUTTON. September 22, 1987.
