Spectacular viburnum in flower

The virtues of some of the many species of Viburnum have been extolled before in this section. The focus of attention today is Viburnum macrocephalum, right. This semi-evergreen has the largest flowers of the genus, although the big globular trusses are actually composed of numerous small sterile blooms. The weight of these flower heads, which may span 15cm and are pure white when at their peak, tends to give the shrub a rather pendulous appearance. Unfortunately, V. macrocephalum is not easily procurable.
