Promising oat cultivars

Two oat cultivars have emerged as the most promising new strains in a joint trial by the D.S.I.R. and N. R. M. Flemings.

After the first harvest of the programme the two cultivars indicate they could have the potential to improve oat yields to farmers and provide processors with a better quality cereal. Milling tests will not be done until sufficient oats are available after harvesting next year. Initiated and developed by Gore processors, Fleming and Company, Ltd, the five-year project aims at producing an improved oat with a large groat and minimal of hull. "A better oat will improve both yield and extraction rate,” says Mr Stan Adams, manager of Fleming and Company. “It is essential if our farmers are to compete against oats imported from Australia where a lower price of raw materials exists.”
