Aust, market holds ground

NZPA Sydney The Australian share market closed higher in dull trading yesterday, after three sessions of profit taking, as investors quietly supported selected stocks across the boards. Brokers said generally flat news from abroad overnight and the unwinding of several futures arbitrage plays saw many investors take to the sidelines, with options-related trading dominating the session. Fairfax gained 60c to 900 on turnover of 4.34 million shares worth sAust39M as News gained 80c to 2390. Building issues enjoyed renewed favour. Boral climbed 11c to 644, Pioneer Concrete 5c to 470 and James Hardy 5c to 490. Banking issues National Australia Bank and ANZ fell 14c to 594 and 4c to 556 respectively. Westpac also slipped 6c to 670 on a large options-related turnover of 8.9 M shares worth 547.2 M.

Large resource and goldrelated issues were similarly in patchy demand. Western Mining at 9.54 and Peko to 9.50 gained 10c each, but North Broken Hill lost 5c to 465.

BHP rose 5c to 1075 after losing the same on Wednesday, as CSR closed steady at 470 c on solid turnover.

Firmer bullion.prices during the session did little to boost widespread confidence in the gold sector. Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie rose 20c to 980 and Renison 10c to 1630, but Placer Pacific slipped 15c to 390 and Kidston 10c to 780. At the close, the all ordinaries index was 6.7 points higher at 2277.8. Turnover

was 188.4 M shares, worth $525M. Rises narrowly outnumbered falls.
